Land professionals play a unique and vital role in Marathon’s oil and gas business by ensuring that the company has obtained the right to drill and produce hydrocarbons on a prospect.   They determine land ownership, acquire oil and gas leases, rights of way, surface use agreements, review and record lease documents. Land professionals also identify laws and regulations governing company oil and gas projects and support well permitting requirements.

1. Manage work within an aggressive and dynamic title curative process in order to maintain and sustain continuous drilling activity in a multiple rig development program. Order and review title opinions, secure title curative and request title approval for drilling and division order purposes. Assist IBM Division Order group with initial ownership set up.

2. Pro-actively seek business opportunities that are in areas of interest to Marathon. Build rapport with surface owners, lessors, government officials and industry counterparts to enhance our commitment to be the Partner of Choice. Negotiate, prepare, review and handle a variety of Land contracts and transactions, including oil and gas leases, surface agreements, assignments, joint operating agreements, farm-in/farm-out agreements, miscellaneous letter agreements, gas storage agreements, federal unit agreements, AMI's, etc.

3. Managing complex ongoing commitments and requirements contained in surface use agreements and ensuring Marathon’s compliance with those agreements. This is an environmentally sensitive area and working with the federal and state government agencies will be a critical component of this position. The ability to work with joint operating agreements, surface use agreements, right of way agreements and numerous miscellaneous contracts will be an everyday responsibility.

4. Coordinate Land broker activities associated with fee title, state and/or federal record checking for preparation of ownership and title information. Handle lease acquisition of private, state, native and federal lands, as applicable. Attend state lease sales.

5. Research MOC acreage position and contracts through TOBIN Land System to assist in well generation and reviewing outside proposals. Review term leases and provide recommendations for lease cancellations, renewals, rental obligations, as well as decision point reminder review. Prepare notice lists and application for a variety of state and federal agency hearings. Coordinate the filing of applications with geology, engineering, regulatory and Law personnel and present testimony, as required, at regulatory hearings.

6. Moderate travel required. Trips to various fields and surface locations will be required and occasional out of town travel is necessary.

7. Maintain Land maps and knowledge of MOC acreage inventory and Land positions in key areas, as well as monitoring competitor's Land positions. Provide information for new development opportunities and offer ideas for Land strategies and terms. Prepare and monitor well checklist and Land summaries for all MOC and outside operated wells in your assigned area.

8. Make presentations to Marathon management, departments and teams, as well as potential partners, groups, etc. Assist and participate with engineers, geologists and drilling teammates in the planning and preparation of the business unit drilling program.

9. Act as the point of contact for some stakeholder and public responsibility issues. This can involve public contact through notice letters, phone calls, regulatory process or conducting occasional public meetings.

Degree: Bachelors Required
Major Discipline: PLM, Energy Management, Business, or Law preferred
Computer Proficiencies: Must be proficient in Word and Excel.
Certifications: None required, CPL a plus.
Experience Required: Minimum of 2 years experience in exploration and/or production preferred. Expertise in title, title opinion dissemination and curative preferred; and Bakken Shale, BIA (IMDA, Indian/allottee) and Federal experience a plus.
